Re: [BackpackingLight] Non-Freestanding tent

Ed,
Hmmm...I am not sure that is a good tent for warmer weather along
the AT. Bugs of some type will drive you crazy unless you also use some
sort of supported netting. A couple people I met up in the high peaks area
of the ADK's had one (I think it was the silnylon or UL version) but they
were willing to trade it for a bug tent and tarp. Any pair of adjustable staffs
will hold it up, most any brand will work, but, make sure they are adjustable.
Tying off around a big rock then holding the line down with another rock
works in a pinch.
I would suggest a small 7x8 Silnylon tarp. With a largish piece of
mesh tied over your head and shoulders. This will weigh in at about 20oz
including stakes, line & any sewing you have to do. Also you can do this
for about $70 or so.
(one 7x8' tarp, one-4'x4' piece of mesh screening, five ti stakes, some line
to hang the mesh and stake out the staff, not included was the staff.)
Set this up by staking out the two corners. Set up your staff to about
3'-3'6. Using a couple half-hitches (bowline knot) attach one end to the tarp
and raise it till the ends of the tarp flop about a foot from the bottom. or so.
Stake it out there. Stake the free corners of the tarp down. Then angle the
pole out of the entrance. This will give you a trapezoidal floor space, mostly
out of the weather. Then tie a second line (or sew a loop ahead of time) to
tie off the mesh for your head/shoulders. I tend to roll around at night, so
I don't use this anymore...you may like it. Set it up on a bit of a grade, head
up, though. You do not want water running under it.
My thoughts only . . .

>Hello all, I'm looking at the GoLite Shargri-La 2 tent, this is one of 3 tents that am looking at. Does any one have any feedback with this tent? What I like about this one is the cost $175 and weight 26 oz.
>They are saying i need their trekking pole do i really need to buy their trekking poles if so how are they. What am concern about is the non-freestanding part of it. IF i get this tent any suggestion in how i can set this tent up if i cant put the stakes in the ground. Thanks Happy trails ~ Ed
