Thanks to all who answered my inquiry about alcohol stoves at altitude.
Our two groups used them successfully on a 7-day trek at the Double H
ranch near the VLA in New Mexico. As you said, a good windscreen was
necessary to keep the flame on the pot. Other than that they worked
great. We typically used 2 stoves under a big pot for group cooking.
The stove design was my own refinement of the type found at zenstoves
and the wings stove archive.
I also had good luck using pool chlorine (78% calcium hypochlorite) for
water purification, and with a Kifaru-style field chair I made from Tyvek.
