[BackpackingLight] Re: Treks north of Flagstaff

Our best source of information on this area is either
HikeArizona.com http://hikearizona.com/interestDEX.php?ID=42&RID=6
or ArizonaHikers.com http://www.arizonahikers.com/

The water sources are usually small seasonal seeps or stock tanks. And you will probably have to go off trail to get to most of them. The problem with the small seeps is that the Bull Elk like to urinate in the ponds (a territorial behavior) so you have to get real close to the source to get decent water. The "font of information" is with the hunters. The hunting community has maps by Game Management Unit of the water sources. Smile for the game cameras, most good water sources are on camera. Early archery Elk season starts mid-September. Most hikers do dayhikes or shorter 1-3 day backpacks where we carry or cache water. It's not unusual for us to start out with 8 or 12 liters of water (16lbs to 24lbs in water alone). Two weeks ago I did an overnight on the Pumpkin Trail-Bull Basin Trail to Kendrick Peak but I took 8 liters of water and needed it all. Five weeks ago I dayhiked Inner Basin to Humphreys and there was still snow in the Inner Basin and on Weatherford. Monsoon season goes through early September so we do get sporadic rain most days. The ground is volcanic rock and the rain soaks in real fast.
