Re: [BackpackingLight] Re: Backpacks Capacity

Eric,
Yeah, it works fine back east. In fact, my daughter and I completed
the Osawagathchie/Lows lake paddle/hike trip with exactly that pack and
hers, pretty much as described. 8 days out & back, 'course the canoe,
paddles and vests were not included in the pack, nor did we bring the
bear ball. With the bear ball (I also use a BV450) I would have brought
the G5, instead, I think. Maybe the GoLite...
I actually had some space left over. Enough for two 13oz stools,
the 8'x9' tarp (besides the 2S tent,) fishing gear (brook trout country),
camera, and extra foot wear I could keep fairly dry.
Being early summer, I carried more cloths than I would have later
in June, July or August. I have seen snow in the High Peaks area in
early June. Soo, I think it is fair to say that the new Miniposa will handle
7 or 8 days out, it is somewhat larger than the old ones like I have. Even
solo, it can be done, but, I would likely have to drop the extra's: stools,
tarp, fishing gear, footwear, Neoair pad. You do have to be careful
about loading it, though. To start with, compressing your bag & cloths,
is pretty much mandatory. Anyway, 1500ci is *just* gear. 4-5 days out
will max the pack, unless you pack with a partner. You already packed
the gear.... You will need about 600ci in your partners pack for food. Or,
get some front pouches and belt pouches and stuff these full of food.
While, the a bear ball does fit, barely, it is awkward. If I had to take
one, I would use a larger pack...Golite Trek or Gossamer Gear G5, I think.
Yeah, I know what you mean about rice and beans. My daughter
doesn't care for beans, soo, rice dishes and noodle soup were the
staples. Pepperoni, salami were used to season things along with
lots of salt, pepper and red pepper for a bit of variety. We also made
macaroni w/butter one night.
Like I say, packs are personal things. If you can make a small
pack work, you will be ecstatic. Sometimes, that is a big IF. And, nobody
can ever accuse me of being the pure UL hiker carrying a SVEA most
everywhere I go. Soo, a true minimalist could easily do it in summer, I
am sure.
My thoughts only . . .

>That might work for Back East. That will not work in the High Sierra, where you must haul a bear canister around with you. I am using a Gossamer Gear Mariposa, 2800ci, 3600ci including the mesh pockets. It is (very) slightly larger than what I need with a tarp/tent (SMD Lunar Solo) and a 15F sleeping bag and sufficient clothing to handle a freak snowstorm, and a week's worth of food in a Bearvault 450 (lots of beans and rice, sigh!), but you aren't going to fit all this in a 1500ci pack. If I were backpacking in a place where the weather could be guaranteed warm so I could downsize to a 35F sleeping bag and leave the down inner jacket behind, that would reduce my volume significantly but the bear canister is very ungainly and will never fit in a 1500ci pack. But no bear canister, no Yosemite. Just how it works.
