The ShangriLa2 is a classic double pole pyramid design. Black
Diamond, MSR, and a number of cottage gear companies have made this
sort of shelter for years. This design sheds wind reasonably well and
provides good space for 2 and HUGE for 1 person. It's possible to make
a 3.5 season version of this shelter which weights considerable less.
I use the now discontinued Mountain Laurel Designs SuperFly which has
a very similar design and size but weights just under 11oz for the
tarp itself (mine is a bit more because I have a netting perimeter.)
No free standing?... when backpacking, opposed to climbing, you can
typically plan your route so basic staking is possible. . When
staking doesn't work it's common to use some combination of deadfall
and/or piles of rocks which secures a guyline which is attached to the
tarps corners.
As to poles... you can carry poles specific designed to hold the
shelter up. More common is to use hiking poles during the day, and
then use these same poles to hold up their shelter at night. I am
fond of the Gossamer Gear adjustable poles which weight just 7oz for
the pair, rather than the more typical 20oz... but they will set you
back around $160.
Personally, if I was buying a solo shelter for the long trails I would
be much more inclined to go with the MLD DuoMid, SMD Gatewood Cape, or
a tarptent from Tarptent.com, SMD, or Gossamer Gear.
BTW: What are you planning to do about bugs?
