to some extent you're still going to be dealing with the packaging, tho repacking may be more effecient and reduce some trash.  i think the one advantage either way is with clean up.  i've gone to mostly the freezer bag method.  only clean up is licking your spoon clean.  no wasted water, especially if the water is hard to come by and it usually is.  just got back from a 5 day trip to Isle Royale and our waste (2 of us) fit in a 1 gallon zip lock.

I just wanted to get a few opinions on using Mountain House (or similar) freeze dried meals on the trail? I was thinking I could repackage them and then vacuum seal to save some weight as well.
I figured If I'm carrying a pot to boil water, why do i need the packaging to eat from.
