[BackpackingLight] Re: Freeze dried Meals

I usually carry the freeze dried meals, not mountain house but enertia trails. I don't repack the enertia like I used to the Mountain house because they pack down quite small already and the weight is negligible. I used to use the Mountain house but the ingredients, packaging and taste eventually turned me off to fd for a while until I found enertia.

I reuse the cooking bags since they're clear plastic that seals tightly for oatmeal and other breakfast heatups and usually use my knit hat as a koozie to help cook it quicker. Did I mention no clean up too ;)

I carry a cat stove and a 16oz walmart metal mug so it's perfect for me since I don't want to cook on the trail anyway.

I can fit 7 days food/munchies and toiletries in my BearVault Solo BV 450.

Nutritionally, I find no difference in backpacking whole foods as apposed to fd, did many years of whole food and noticed that it took up more space in my pack but was considerably cheaper. (larger pot, longer cook times, bulkier foods...)

If you don't mind the upfront $$ to buy a weeks worth of meals, you can reuse the containers and fd your own meals. I've been doing this for 3 yrs now and really enjoy it because I don't think about the meals that much, just grab what I need and get a mess o gorp/travel bars and hit the trails.

Happy trails...
