Re: [BackpackingLight] Esbit vs Alcohol Stoves

You could probably put me in the same box as Robin on this. I like to carry both at times. I have gotten used to wiping my 600 mug bottom on the dirt/sand/gravel/leaves/grass to get the bulk of the esbit gue off it. I can get a cup of hot drink  two different times off one esbit tab. The water isn't boiling but who wants boiling hot coffee anyway. It's easy enough to blow the tab out when I pull the water off on the first heat up. I will generally use alcohol in the evening for supper and don't have any residue off of it to wipe away so it is just throw the kit together for after meal cleanup and pull the bag up in the tree after everything is packed back in. It is a little tricky to get an esbit tab lit off a magnesium striker but it can be done with some filings on top of the block and some patience , alcohol on the other hand lights pretty easy with the striker. Better than a match some times ! I know I am carrying a bottle for the alcohol and nothing for using esbits but I personally like the mix most times so it's a hike your own hike choice for me, it won't suit everyone. I like options I guess !
