I was able to go to my local small town hardware and just buy a few feet of hardware cloth.

Thnaks for the tip Liz. I will try going around to some of my local hardware stores to see what they have. I know that the big box stores only sell it in rolls, but maybe Ace or somewhere like that will have it by the foot. I'll look around today.
