Where are you going?
The answers will be different if you are thinking AT or Grand Canyon or Alaska or Central America.
New Brunswick hiking will be very different from Death Valley backpacking. :]
Generally in my experience it isn't so important what you carry, but that you know how to use what you have.
Practice makes perfect, try out a few local overnighters, see what you use, see what you wish you had, see what you could have left home.
And most importantly "Hike your own hike"
