E.L., thanks, very helpful info. It puts me at ease. I'm not good at making reservations in advance, with dates and times always up in the air. Also, I'm spoiled because I've kayak-camped in the Everglades for 15 yrs. You need permits there also, but w/ experience it is easy to get anything you want. I don't have that experience in Yellowstone even though I have been there 4 times during the winter (not camping!)

> In early August a permit should be fairly easy to get, 40% of permits are next-day permits that cannot be reserved. Show up at the permit office the day before after 10:30am, and you are almost 100% guaranteed to get a next-day permit for the trip you want to make (which also allows you to camp in the backpacker's camp that evening). Just be flexible -- make plans for a couple of different possible kayaking trips just in case for some reason everybody else makes that same decision -- and you should be fine.
