They're also good if you're going to be travelling to a country where
kerosene is easier to obtain than white gas. That was the reason I got
an MSR Internationale several years ago. However, in those days it was
still okay to travel with a used camp stove and (empty) fuel bottle;
it's more difficult to take those on an airplane now.

But aside from the heavy duty or foreign travel uses, as others have
commented I find the MSR too heavy as well as too fussy to use. I use a
Giga SnowPeak canister stove now -- not as light as an alcohol stove,
but ultra easy to use and fast fast fast.

Though probably a bit heavier, I've simply been using a windscreen from
my MSR stoves. One question: many of the homemade do-it-yourself
windscreen suggestions involve cutting up a disposable aluminum roasting
pan or oven liner. I've always wondered: wouldn't it be easier,
cheaper, and lighter to simply do what you're describing: take some
foil and double it up (or triple or quadruple or whatever is necessary)?
Why go through all the extra steps and expense of cutting up a roasting
pan?
