That might work for Back East. That will not work in the High Sierra, where you must haul a bear canister around with you. I am using a Gossamer Gear Mariposa, 2800ci, 3600ci including the mesh pockets. It is (very) slightly larger than what I need with a tarp/tent (SMD Lunar Solo) and a 15F sleeping bag and sufficient clothing to handle a freak snowstorm, and a week's worth of food in a Bearvault 450 (lots of beans and rice, sigh!), but you aren't going to fit all this in a 1500ci pack. If I were backpacking in a place where the weather could be guaranteed warm so I could downsize to a 35F sleeping bag and leave the down inner jacket behind, that would reduce my volume significantly but the bear canister is very ungainly and will never fit in a 1500ci pack. But no bear canister, no Yosemite. Just how it works.

Not trying to say "can't be", just saying that conditions vary and while your advice may be applicable to this particular gentleman's case, it may not be applicable to other people. YMMV and so forth.
