Re: [BackpackingLight] light weight knife

Edwardo, how big is your salami?

A friend of mine has a Kabar BK11. It's small and light but pricey.
It's big enough for any ordinary salami. It's a carbon steel blade,
black oxidized, so you need to keep it dry, but it does stay sharp if
you keep the rust off it. I don't like the plastic sheath.

I have a Leatherman Micra, which weighs very little but the blade is is
too small and flimsy for many salamis. It's also troublesome to fish
out of my pocket, all the little swivelly things collect dirt and make
grinding noises, and I hardly ever need its tiny scissors or tweezer,
but it's so unobtrusive I still carry it. Mainly I use it to clean my
nails (with the knife, the nail cleaner is useless for cleaning nails).
I got it for free so I can't comment on price vs. value.

For actual knife needs I carry a Linder 440305 short skinning knife like
this one:

You can get them for $20-$30 if you keep watching ebay. I like to have
it on my belt where I can grab it it easily with no fuss. It's not the
absolute lightest, but the short form factor makes it light enough for
me. Linder is high quality, and it's a full tang blade that can handle
the toughest salamis.

But ... why not buy pre-sliced salami?
